Ameren is a public utility holding company. Through its subsidiaries, Co. operates electric generation, transmission, and distribution businesses; natural gas transmission and distribution businesses; and merchant generation businesses in Missouri and Illinois. As of Dec 31 2012, Co. had three reportable segments: Ameren Missouri, which through Union Electric Company, supplied electric to 1.2 million customers and natural gas to 127,000 customers; Ameren Illinois, which through Ameren Illinois Company, supplied electric to 1.2 million customers and natural gas to 806,000 customers; and Merchant Generation, which consists primarily of the operations of AmerenEnergy Resources Company, LLC.
