CNX Stock Enters Oversold Territory as RSI Falls Below 30

Just after sunset, energy drilling equipment continues operation.

CNX Resources Corp (CNX) moved into oversold territory in Tuesday trading, with shares falling as low as $32.88. The move pushed CNX's Relative Strength Index, or RSI, to 29.6, a level that typically signals short-term selling pressure has become stretched. In technical analysis, an RSI reading below 30 is widely viewed as an oversold condition, while readings above 70 are generally considered overbought.

RSI is a momentum indicator that measures the speed and magnitude of recent price moves on a scale from 0 to 100. While the indicator does not predict a reversal on its own, it can help identify points where downside momentum may be weakening, particularly when combined with price support levels, trading volume, and broader sector conditions.

How CNX Compares With Energy Market Momentum

CNX's RSI reading of 29.6 stands below the average RSI of 44.5 for the energy stocks tracked by Energy Stock Channel. Relative to key energy benchmarks, CNX also appears weaker on a short-term momentum basis. The RSI of WTI Crude Oil is 39.8, the RSI of Henry Hub Natural Gas is 57.3, and the 3-2-1 Crack Spread has an RSI of 18.6.

That comparison matters because CNX is a natural gas-focused producer, and shifts in commodity sentiment can influence how investors interpret technical weakness in the stock. A low RSI in CNX alongside a relatively stronger RSI in Henry Hub natural gas may suggest company-specific selling pressure, equity market positioning, or broader concerns around valuation and execution rather than a uniform deterioration in the underlying commodity backdrop.

What an Oversold RSI Can Signal

An oversold RSI does not necessarily mean a stock has reached a bottom. It indicates that recent selling has been sufficiently persistent to push momentum into a historically weak range. In practice, that can lead to two different outcomes:

Possible implications of an RSI below 30:

  • A short-term bounce if selling pressure begins to fade.
  • Continued weakness if negative momentum is driven by fundamental or macro factors.
  • Higher sensitivity to news, earnings revisions, commodity price moves, or changes in market risk appetite.

For that reason, many market participants treat oversold readings as a screening signal rather than a stand-alone trading conclusion. The strongest technical setups often emerge when an oversold RSI is accompanied by stabilization in price action or a break above near-term resistance.

CNX Share Price in Context

Over the past 52 weeks, CNX shares have traded between $27.72 and $43.62. Against that range, the recent trade around $32.94 places the stock meaningfully below its high but still above its 52-week low. Shares were recently down about 1.5% on the day.

This positioning suggests that, while the stock has weakened enough to trigger an oversold momentum reading, it has not yet returned to the bottom of its one-year range. That distinction is useful: a stock can be oversold from a momentum perspective without being historically cheap on a longer-term price basis.

Key Question: Does Oversold Mean Undervalued?

Not necessarily. RSI measures price momentum, not intrinsic value. A stock can become oversold because of temporary technical pressure, but it can also remain oversold if investors are adjusting to weaker expectations, lower commodity prices, or a changing risk outlook. For CNX, evaluating whether the recent decline is merely technical or reflects a more durable reassessment requires looking beyond the chart to operating performance, capital allocation, and natural gas market fundamentals.

Even so, the drop in CNX's RSI below 30 puts the stock on the radar for investors tracking momentum extremes in the energy sector. At a minimum, it signals that selling has become pronounced enough to warrant closer attention.
